R Shiny on server running Apache and Cpanel

We are developing an R Shiny app that connects to a MySQL database hosted on a Cpanel site. Users visit the website hosted on cpanel to enter data into the database and then the R Shiny app interacts with that database.

We've used the following packages to develop the app:

  • htmlwidgets
  • devtools
  • shiny
  • RMySql
  • jsonlite

We've had some advice not to deploy the shiny server on the current server that the website is hosted on, which uses Apache and Cpanel/WHM. The advice was to set it up on a separate VPS running Ubuntu.

So here's what I need to know: Is it best to set this up on the current Apache/cpanel server that hosts the related website/database? Or to host it on a separate server?

TIA, Chris
