Can't import project to gitlab.com - Basic 101 issues

How to view the contents of what appears to be a GitLab export?

Ultra-beginners who stumbled across a GitLab export (we think) of an employee that is no longer with us. Due diligence says we need to figure out if this is company IP or not. However, no one has any experience with GitLab. All we care about is what is code for? We don't care about branches, commits, etc. at this point.

Attempted:

  1. Found numerous *.tgz files, each contains a single *.tar with the following structure. folder structure

  2. Created a GitLab.com account and attempted to create a 'new project'... 'import project'... selected 'GitLab export' (best guess) and pointed to one of the *.tgz files

  3. Got error that it must be a .gz extension so tried different naming/unzipping to no avail

  4. Did download Portable Git and ran: $ git verify-pack -v pack-foo.pack and it shows commits/blobs/trees as would be expected
