Integrating Linked Data into the Fiware Ecosystem

Viewed 80

I've been reading up on the NGSI-LD standard and its integration into Orion-LD and it all seems pretty straightforward. I've also delved, for other studies, into semantic web technologies (ontologies, RDF, OWL, Sparql engine etc..) and some doubts arose, maybe due to my little experience with linked data.

  • Is it wrong to use linked data to define metadata that can be queried via semantic queries? And so, is it possible to use Orion-LD as an endpoint for semantic queries?
  • When we insert an entity in Orion-LD, rather than specifying the URI of a model schema available online, could we use the schema of an ontology defined somewhere in OWL format?
  • Can we then bypass the use of a Virtuoso/Sparql ecosystem and use Orion-LD for storing and querying metadata?

An NGSI-LD context broker (e.g. Orion-LD) is agnostic to data models, so, you can do pretty much whatever you want.
However, if you don't use any standard data model, your data can't really be shared, so, perhaps not the best idea. The broker will let you though.

About query languages, NGSI-LD specifies the query language for an NGSI-LD compliant broker to support - you might have seen that in the API spec.

Can Orion-LD replace some of the features of virtuoso? Certainly. However, they are not quite the same. While you have SPARQL for querying a virtuoso you can use NGSI-LD for Orion-LD.

What you can insert into the Orion-LD are NGSI-LD entities (which is a subset of JSON-LD) so you cannot use an OWL/RDF format.

Regarding data models in order to be interoperable, we trust in Smart Data Models Program where you can find more than 700 data models available, documented, and tested in real case scenarios or coming from open and adopted standards.

Anyhow, it is explained in a previous comment that you can insert whatever you want in the Orion-LD because no checkings are made, only that it has a valid JSON syntax.
