Unit testing should happen, but how often does it actually happen?

I am doing an internship with a small software development company, 5 - 6 developers total. Two are senior level, one is mid-level, the rest are junior and then there's me, the intern. During an interview, the senior developer basically said that unit testing is a good thing that should happen but is not as common as I would think. Basically, unit testing happens way less than one might think, coming into the development world. The main software stack is Angular and C#.

Just curious what an other developer's take on this might be? I'm sure for a large company unit testing is budgeted in and implemented on the regular, but what about smaller companies that do contract work?
