phpMyAdmin Failed to Connect to the MySQL Server

Question

I used XAMPP to run the phpMyAdmin but it keeps showing this error that says:

phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

(A) For your case, you are using config as authentication type:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'config';

First, please create a user for phpmyadmin:

sudo mysql --user=root mysql -p

then

CREATE USER 'phpmyadmin'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'some_pass';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'phpmyadmin'@'localhost' WITH GRANT OPTION;

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Then, edit the config.inc.php file. You can find it in "C:\xampp\phpmyadmin" and change:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'root';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = '';

to

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'phpmyadmin';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']  = 'some_pass';

(B) An alternative way (which I think is safer) is to use the following:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'http';

In that case, the phpmyadmin would popup a box asking you to enter the username and password.
