How to make a text in a JLabel transparent?

I have a GridLayout. I want the cells in the GridLayout to have an "inner/invisible" value, so I put a JLabel in each of the cells. But I don't want the text in JLabels to be visible. I tried setVisible(false), but then the MouseListener doesn't work on them.
So, how can I make the text in a JLabel transparent?
