Laravel. Where Should I put CSS files?

I put file name style.css in {Laravel_project}/public/css/

I included in blade file like this.

  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{ asset('css/style.css') }}" >

and then checked its source on browser.

  <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://localhost:8000/css/style.css" >

the file doesn't exist. 404 Not Found
