What worked for me was the following; If you are using Android Studio 3.6.1 downgrade gradle to version 3.5.3:

classpath 'com.android.tools.build:gradle:3.5.3'

Then clean the project: Build > Clean Project. Now I was able to run the project again. But if I rebuild the project, I got the same errors. I think there are some problems with the new Gradle offline mode integration in the new Android Studio version.
