Swift compiler takes too long to compile simple program with 1 array (>30s)

The following program with just 1 big array is taking over 30 seconds to compile:

The whole "program" is just that 1 constant (let a = /*...*/)

Compiling takes ~35 seconds.

I'm compiling with Swift 4.1.3 for Ubuntu 16.04:

  • > swiftc main.swift // 35 seconds!

Why is it so long?

Notes:

  • If I specify the type explicitly (let a: [[Int]] = /*...*/), compilation time goes down to ~22 seconds (still a lot).
  • This experiment is purely academic.

A C example takes less than 0.05s:

int a[64][46] = { 
   {1,1,...,1},
   {1,1,...,1},
   ...
};
int main(){ return 0; }

I don't expect C like results here, but 35 seconds seems way too much. Any insights will be greatly appreciated.

swift compilation

After running a few more tests with different versions of swiftc (thanks @Hamish), it seems that the latest version is having understandable/decent times of ~0.5s (in the latest trunk dev-snapshot).

Examples:

  1. Compiling with latest trunk (dev) snapshot. (With explicit type annotation)
> ~/swift/trunk-snapshot-2018-08-26/usr/bin/swiftc main.swift
# done in ~0.5 seconds
  1. Without explicit type annotation (i.e. type being inferred)
> ~/swift/trunk-snapshot-2018-08-26/usr/bin/swiftc main.swift
# done in ~9.0 seconds (understandable, there are ~3,000 elements in the array)
