Can search engine spiders see content I add using jQuery?

I currently have something like this

<p class="test"></p>

<script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function() {
          $(".test").html("hey");
    });
</script>

Will search engines be able to spider the "hey" text? and if yes, what method can I use to prevent that.
