Why is PHP session_destroy() not working?

I tried to destroy all session variable by using the session_destroy() method, but after using this method, the values are not destroyed.

Why is session_destroy() not working?

Is there any other way to destroy the session in PHP?

if (isset($_SESSION['LAST_ACTIVITY']) && (time() - $_SESSION['LAST_ACTIVITY'] > 1800))
{
    session_destroy();
    session_unset();
}

I had to also remove session cookies like this:

session_start();
$_SESSION = [];

// If it's desired to kill the session, also
// delete the session cookie.
// Note: This will destroy the session, and
// not just the session data!
if (ini_get("session.use_cookies")) {
    $params = session_get_cookie_params();
    setcookie(session_name(), '', time() - 42000,
        $params["path"], $params["domain"],
        $params["secure"], $params["httponly"]
    );
}

// Finally, destroy the session.
session_destroy();

if you destroy the session on 127.0.0.1 it will not affect on localhost and vice versa
