How to read an image in Lua

I am working on a shape identifying neural network, but I need to be able to get an image to analyze. I found a repo on GitHub, but it's not a luarock. Is there any way to either make a luarock from it, or any luarocks to read/analyze images? (preferably PNG) Or is there any other way to put it in?
