Why Index.php file not working after updating from index.html?

I was developing a website in the localhost server but due to some reasons, I have changed the extension of my index file to .php from .html. But whenever I try to access the URL, it still comes with a .html extension although I have updated it. Please suggest what should I do to resolve this.
