atom . command not working in cmd and not getting any error either

The "atom ." command is working in hyper-terminal (which I've been using for a while), but not in my cmd or windows PowerShell. I have the path added in my environment variable for atom. The cursor loads for a few seconds but does not launch atom. P.S: The folder I am trying to open is under desktop folder.
