Why does .htaccess file giving error after adding AuthType Basic is giving 500 error?

I am trying to secure my site using the .htaccess and .htpassword files.

previously my .htaccess file was containing code

And it was perfectly working.

When I added code for protection like below :

AuthType Basic

AuthName "Password Protected Area"

AuthUserFile .htpassword

Require valid-user

RewriteEngine On

RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(?:www\.)?(.+)$ [NC]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

Now issue comes

I am able to see prompts for username and password

But after filling in the correct username password it is showing error like this : Error page
