How to detect a failed-over server instance?

An Ubuntu server instance does a fail-over, and you can ssh into the same ip address before and after the fail-over. What properties in the machine to check for that can tell me that I'm inside a failed-over instance. If NIC MAC values and /dev/sda UUID stays the same, what is the tell then?
