How GUN works in a LAN?

I'm starting to study the GUN database, but I didn't understand how it manages peer connections in a Local Area Network. When you instantiate GUN, you have to pass peers to start connections, right ? But what if the peers are on the same LAN? How can GUN automatically discover and connect to them?
