Trouble with if then statement in bash

Have a bonus assignment for a class and am tasked with displaying information given a few different inputs. my current script for this to pull the information I need

cat $date* | grep -i $hour | grep $dayornight | $4

if [ $4 == "BlackJack*" ]; then awk '{print $1, $2, $3, $4}'

if [ $4 == "Roulette*" ]; then awk '{print $1, $2, $5, $6}'

if [ $4 == "Texas*" ]; then awk '{print $1, $2, $7, $8}'

fi

When I run this with my inputs (filename/hour/am/pm/"BlackJack"), it tells me

"roulette_dealer_finder_by_time_and_game.sh: line 9: BlackJack: command not found" and bricks my terminal depending on what variables I change.

Is there a way to add in a if-then statement in this line of script to pull different columns based on different keywords, for example Texas/Roulette/BlackJack?

bash roulette_dealer_by_time_and_game.sh 0310 5 PM BlackJack would be the command to run it

and this is the file it would try to grab information from and based on the $4 input it would grab say coumn 123and4

edit: I updated the script a bit to give a clearer picture of what I'm trying to accomplish. And the game type would just be to designate what column the script should be pulling from. the file name is actually the date so 0310 for example

Because you pipe into $4, which tries to run a command called Blackjack. I assume that is your input file? If so, that's what you should process, rather than cat $date*

Your file appears to use spaces instead of tabs, or any other consistent delimiter. That being said, awk will be more difficult to use. More specifically, names shouldn't be assumed to be "First Last", even if hyphenated, so your column numbers won't be consistent. If you edit the file to use commas/tabs/pipes, then you can know for sure which name is which...

Regarding your inputs, it's not clear what 0310 should return since passing that into grep with the shown file will return nothing...

I'd recommend you fix the column delimiters, such as using a CSV, then you can use cut

Keep in mind that grep -i $DAY_NIGHT will also include rows where the name includes am (case insensitive), such as Amber
