Is it possible to automate Bar/ QR code scanning using Appium for iOS/Android app?

Just wanted to know if this is possible to automate bar code or QR code scanning for mobile testing automation using Emulator/simulator or even on Virtual devices using Sauce labs or Perfecto? If Yes, Plz suggest the approach.
