Is it posbiel to authentificate with an EID card on linux?

Basically as the title says, I had the idea to use an authentication EID card method on Linux but I wasn't able to find any resources about this topic. Is my idea possible, is it already implemented ? Does this type of authentication has a name ? I'm using arch with XFCE4
