Does a radio with the mt7601u support P2P wifi mode?

I am bench-marking wifi modules for a product and am a bit confused about what exactly makes a module support P2P mode. Specifically, I have an MT7601u based radio that I want to test in P2P (wifi driect) mode. I didn't manage to get p2p mode to work with this radio (through wpa_cli, p2p_find always returns as FAIL) When I run iw list I get the following:

1. How can I interpret the fact that p2p is not in the supported mode, but p2p frames and commands seem supported?

2. in the default driver, AP mode is not supported, but there are several open-source drivers that enable AP support. Does that mean that the limitation is not in the hardware but in the driver? If that is the case, are there any open source drivers that enable p2p support for the MT7601?
