Style Bootstrap 4 Custom Checkbox

How do I style a custom checkbox in Bootstrap 4? I've tried everything but I can't even change its background color.

This is my code outline:

It worked for me with

.custom-checkbox .custom-control-input:checked~.custom-control-label::before {
    background-color: #caca4c;
}
.custom-control-input:checked~.custom-control-label::before {
    color: #fff;
    background-color: #caca4c;

You simply just had to override custom-control-indicator style.

try as below

I have the same question as olefrank. I want to use an alternative image. For example on our intranet's forms page, to indicate a favorite form, I'd like the user to select a star instead of a checkbox. I got it to work with images, but I used the markup specified in Bootstrap 4 documentation:
